Chicks with Picks Melbourne is a guitar and ukulele teaching business run by musician and song writer, Helen Begley. It is a place for women to learn instruments together in a safe, supportive and social way. Honorary chicks (blokes) are welcome to join the men’s group or have private lessons. Helen first started playing ukulele in The Ukulele Revolution run by poet, Myron Lysenko and supported by number one patron, writer, Helen Garner. During that time, Helen (Begley) won the inaugural Melbourne Ukulele Songwriting and since then has enjoyed introducing hundreds of students to the sweetest instruments in the world. Students come from all over Melbourne to learn lovely songs and meet new musical mates privately and in small groups on both ukulele and guitar. When they can, the women from Chicks with Picks Melbourne love nothing better than getting together, en masse, to play songs and trade ukulele and guitar licks and picks and host jam sessions. Helen also runs a blokes group called MOMMA (Men of Mystical Musical Ability) on a Monday evening in Surrey Hills. They have just designed themselves a T-shirt and had they’re first Open Mike performance at the Melbourne Ukulele Festival.
