On Wednesdays at recess, up in the 6A classroom at St Dominic’s Catholic Primary School in Melton, a dedicated and enthusiastic group of budding ukulele players gather each week. Some of them have been learning for longer than others and these more accomplished musicians assist the beginners.
These sessions are short, fast and fabulous. Players often balance snack food and ukuleles at the same time while their ukulele teacher, Rosemary Etherton bellows over the joyous noise. There is always a lot of fun and never enough time! They learn a range of genres and their favourite cords are C, G7, F and C7.
At St Dominic’s, there is also a small group of students who meet up once a week. This group is known as The Happy Ukers. This year they have been learning One Day by the American reggae singer Matisyahu and Give Me One Good Reason by the folk blues singer, Tracy Chapman.
